Pom Poms

To get into the christmas spirit I've made a pom pom decoration in festive colours. The idea came about when my sister was making various things with wool and showed me how easy it is to make these pom poms. Follow the step by step guide to learn how I made this super cute decoration!

You will need:
Wool - in how ever many colours you wish
Scissors
pom pom makers
(optional) a branch or stick of some kind or alternatively perhaps ribbon or thread

*this is a very picture based post to show precisely how to use the tool*

You need to open the pom pom maker so that it looks like this to begin and choose your colour wool.

Start to wrap the wool around this part of the tool until it is completely covered. Don't be afraid to wrap this too much because it needs to be thick to give the pom pom a full effect!

Once wrapped around this half take the tread through the tiny slot...

Close the half of the maker you have the wool around and begin the same on the other side, wrapping it until it's completed covered. Once you've done this close it.

When you have closed the maker it will look like this.

Now for the fun part... using a pair of scissors cut along the middle all the way around.

You'll soon see the start of your pom pom developing!

Take a new strand of wool and tie in a double knot around the middle (the area you just cut around). This must be extremely tight as this will hold the pom pom together! Before you cut the end of the wool make sure it is at the length you want it to hang, i.e. if you want them long leave a large length how I have done for mine (see final photo below).

Time to undo the maker by opening both halves and then (as per the below image) pull apart from the centre.

To make this into a garland you could tread wool, string, cotton or anything you like through each pom pom! I've found a branch and attached the pom poms simply by tying them and creating varied lengths.

I really like this quick, easy way of using wool to make a christmas decoration. You could tailor this to any occasion not just christmas. For instance a baby shower using white, pink and blue wool. There are so many other ways of using pom poms this is just one!
