Hunny Bee Cupcakes

For my nephews 2nd birthday I made these really fun Winnie the Pooh themed cupcakes! Little bee hives, including doors, bumble bees, trails and a sprinkle of glitter.

Start with making the cupcakes, whichever flavour you like, I've done carrot cake this time. Also choose what colour cupcake cases you'd like to use - I didn't have an brown so have used red, pink and yellow (in keeping with Winnie the Pooh, Piglet and Tigger). Set the cakes aside to cool and start making your bees!

Using fondant icing either bought in these three colours, or make them by adding food colouring and mixing well. First make an oval type shape out of yellow for the body. Using the black roll it out into a thin line and wrap it around in two places. For the wings make two little balls and gently flatten with your fingertip, pinch the bottom of it to make a wing shape. Stick the two wings on the top and bend into the shape you like. (You can use water icing, edible glue or similar to stick them). With a cocktail stick add dots of black food colouring for the eyes.

To make the bee hive doors roll out the black icing, using a knife or similar, cut out the little shape and smooth the edges.

To make the butter icing, soften butter and add icing sugar gradually mixing with an electric whisk. Add a splash of vanilla extract and add plenty of yellow food colouring.

Choose a large round piping nozzle like this one, to get smooth butter icing.

To achieve this, make sure that you don't angle the piping bag, but hold it directly above the cake, then add the bee hive doors...

and bumble bees!

For a little extra touch add dots of black food colouring as the bee's trail and a sprinkle of yellow glitter!!
